With this, an 18-year old Sataparna Mukherjee has now become the youngest Indian to bag the prestigious Goddard Internship Programme (GIP) with NASA. She is among five scholars chosen from around the world. GIP selects five individuals from across the world every year and funds their entire graduate studies.

A congratulatory message posted by US Embassy in India highlighted the rare award that the Indian girl has won. Here is what was posted:

“She is among five scholars chosen from around the world. GIP selects five individuals from across the world every year and funds their entire graduate studies. She will pursue her post-graduation and PhD at Oxford University (as NASA faculty) in aerospace engineering at its London Astrobiology Centre.”

But that is not it, many do not know that despite coming from a rural India household, Sataparna Mukherjee actually has a great background with her father being the headmaster in a local school.

As per a Times of India report, Sataparna Mukherjee’s father Pradeep Mukherjee had led from the front in the campaign for justice in the Kamduni gangrape case of 2013.

In the Kamduni brutal gangrape case of 2013, a young girl was brutally raped and her body was slit till her navel.

The rapists were local radicals with political clout and this people’s movement eventually led to a fair enquiry and justice.

Sataparna Mukherjee is going on August 17, 2016,  and as mentioned earlier, the cost of her study and her stay will be borne by NASA.
