Shashi Tharoor’s surprising take on ‘Hindu genocide’

Did Hindu genocide take place? That has been a topic of much discussion with the majority of Indian historians denying that such a calamity ever befell the Hindus. In fact, the toast of the season Shashi Tharoor is also one of the people who believe that Hindu genocide did not take place.

Shashi Tharoor was being congratulated for his take on the atrocities done by the British Empire in India.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor while speaking on his latest book ‘Inglorious Empire’ had said that Indians and Britons have forgotten how the British ruled India. While talking to Channel 4, the Congress MP had attacked Britain saying that there is “historical amnesia” in the nation about what the empire entailed. He said “let them forgive, but let them not forget” in a reference to the amnesia that now is rampant among British and said that the British students studying at ‘A’ level, are not being taught of colonial history and the “atrocities” like how the Empire funded its industrial revolution by squeezing more from its colonies such as India.

His comment that “Britain came to one of the richest countries in the world (India) in the early 18th century and reduced it, after 200 years of plunder, to one of the poorest” got the entire India cheering but his take on the Hindu genocide during the Islamic rule shows his shallow understanding of the issue.

In a tweet Shashi Tharoor had tweeted:

“Only by coming to terms w/history can we free ourselves”: @Harvard Pres DrewFaust. Exactly what I want the British2realize!

Following which, a man named Rajesh Gehani asked for his opinion on the Hindu genocide during the Islamic rule and here it is when the Congress MP gave an epic reply. He said:

Yes if there’d been “Hindu genocide” how come there are 880 million of us still in India?

Needless to say that his comments on the Hindu genocide got him many brickbats:

Do you agree with Shashi Tharoor on Hindu genocide?

But the Congress MP did not reply to anyone. Perhaps, he felt that there was no need to say anything further since he made his position clear.
