Bangladesh: Land grabbers attack Hindu house

Dhaka, February 18, 2016: Minority Hindus found themselves under attack, yet again, in Bangladesh.

Today (18th February 2016), houses of the Hindu minorities were attacked on at about 11 a.m near the bus stand within the Thakurgaon Sadar of Thakurgaon district in Bangladesh.

The incident came to light via human rights watchdog Bangladesh Minority Watch which also informed that the house of minority Hindu, Jagadish Chandra, was demolished by a powerful local leader of Awami League. It used

Bangladesh Minority Watch also alleged that the Police took no action so far despite a clear cognizable offense committed by the local perpetrators.

The human rights watchdog said that Jagadish Chandra and his family members have been staying on the purchased plot of land since 30 years. There is also a graveyard adjacent to his house.

Jagadish started construction work to build a wall within his plot.

On the date of the incident, a powerful land grabber along with other hooligans attacked Jagdish’s house and also the construction work going on.

The perpetrator also boasted that he belonged to the Awami League.

Jagadish was mercilessly beaten by these criminals before they left him and fled away. The victim has been sent to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital for treatment.

The local people, as per the Bangladesh Minority Watch, said that the attack was made for the forceful grabbing of the land belonging to the Hindus there.

Bangladesh Minority Watch communicated with Mr. Abdul Mannan, Inspector in Charge of Thakurgaon Sadar Police station over his mobile, who the human rights group says tried to suppress the facts and said that the incident is not communal but rather normal.

The human rights activist from BDMW reached out to the victim who said: “I am in great peril and I am not in a position to lodge any F.I.R. against this powerful perpetrator, please try to help us.”

The Bangladesh Minority Watch feels that the Police is neglecting to take any cognizance on the issue. The human rights groups also expressed its concerneon this latest attack on the Hindu houses and has demanded immediate arrest of the perpetrators.
