Hindu woman Shanti became one of the shining examples of women empowerment in Pakistan when she cracked the glass ceiling and became a constable in the Sindh Police force.

Shanti comes from the Kohli community which is one of the most vulnerable section of the minority Hindu community and from which many girls have succumbed to forced conversion and bonded labour.

Pakistan hails the achievement of the Hindu woman:

Hindu women have been at the receiving end in Pakistan for long. Yet, they continue to stress on their presence and human rights through positive steps. Shanti is one of the examples of this positive thinking of the community. It is prudent to stress that the Hindu woman Shanti comes from a very poor background and comes from the low caste community of Hindus which makes her achievement even more sweet for the Hindus in Pakistan.

Sherry Rehman, former Information minister and a member of ruling Pakistan People’s Party, retweeted the information on Twitter prompting a round of applause from Marvi Sirmed amongst others.

ASP Zahida Parveen hailed the move and said:

Sindh police recruits Shanti Devi as First Lady Constable of Kohli community (a Hindu community in Umerkot). She is a daughter of local farmer Rai Chand. Kudos to the brave lady. Commendable step taken in right direction by the higher ups.

The move is being seen as the step in the right direction for women empowerment as well. The picture we present is the only one made available by the Sindh Police.
