Married Hindu woman forcefully converted to Islam

A married Hindu woman was forced to convert to Islam in Bangladesh evoking angry reaction from the minority watchdog Bangladesh Minority Watch (BDMW.)

BDMW reports that a married Hindu woman Basona Rani Saha (26) was kidnapped and forcefully converted to Islam and also swore the same on an affidavit dated 23.07,2016 at Sariakandi Upazila of Bogra District in Bangladesh.

The married Hindu woman is the wife of Rabindra Nath Saha and also has two minor children.

She reportedly was abducted by Md.Sukkur Ali Pramanik(38). The husband of the woman lodged an FIR at the Sariakandi police station (case No.09 dated 29.07.2016 under section 7 of Women and Children Repression Act,2003 against the kidnapper Md.Sukkur Ali).

However, the police showed no interest in the rescue of the married Hindu woman till the writing of this report.

Bangladesh Minority Watch came to know that the married Hindu woman has been remarried and there is an affidavit filed before the Notary Public by the perpetrator.

BDMW called this action adultery as the section 497 of Bangladesh Penal code says that “Whoever has sexual intercourse with a person who is and whom he knows or has reason to believe to be wife of another man, such sexual intercourse not amounting to offense of rape, but is guilty of offense of adultery and shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for term of which extent to five years or with fine or with both. In such a case the wife shall not be punishable as an abettor.”

Bangladesh Minority Watch expressed serious concern over the kidnapping and forceful conversion to Islam of the married Hindu women like this. It also said that the conversion affidavit should be investigated.
